Tokyo Aleworks Smashing Imperialism is a 9% imperial stout from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative lineup, with this being an effort from them with Napalm Death, and proceeds of the are being donated to the charity of Second Harvest Japan and Doctors Without Borders.

Tokyo Aleworks Smashing Imperialism Aroma and Taste

Tokyo Aleworks Smashing Imperialism poured out a pitch black colour with a finger’s worth of tan coloured head on top that faded to an oily slick on top, with some tan bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma was of a rich thick chocolate and coffee one, with some roasted black malt coming through too. At 9%, Tokyo Aleworks Smashing Imperialism isn’t the boldest of imperial stouts in terms of booziness, but it was noticeable once the beer had been given a chance to warm up.

I didn’t feel like smashing anything while drinking Tokyo Aleworks Smashing Imperialism, but I did feel like knocking back the beer quicker than I should have done. The smoothness of the chocolate and coffee flavours was surprising as I was expecting an acridity of the black malt used to come through but it didn’t. Even when warmed up. The flavours lingered longingly on the palate, before an alcohol warmth came through with some hints of dried plums, or maybe raisins, too. Those same dark flavours lingered on into the aftertaste, with a slight alcohol warmth just bringing them through.
