West Coast Natural Squeeze Red Ale is a 7.5% amber ale from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though whether it is a seasonal or limited edition beer is unknown at the time of writing.

West Coast Natural Squeeze Red Ale Aroma and Taste

West Coast Natural Squeeze Red Ale poured out a deep reddish brown colour with a large, slightly off-white reddish tinge head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The beer had a real mixture of aromas going on – citrus mixed with woody caramel aroma, punctuated by some nutty fruitiness, and a twinge of butter going on too. A real mixture of aromas that left me scratching – is this a hoppy English amber, an American amber trying to be an English amber, or was it an English amber trying to be an American amber trying to be English?

The body was quite dry, as I was expecting something a bit sweeter after the nose. The body was also a mixture of flavours too, with them following the aroma to a T. The citrus lemony punch brought an edge that wasn’t bitter, but more tart, with a woody flavour that had a burnt caramel tone to it. The nuttiness reminded me something of a rye beer, though not as potent or as spicy, and the butteriness brought back memories of an English amber. It was a very peculiar beer that, while not easy drinking, was certainly flavourful.
