Kyoto New Frontier is a 5% Italian pilsner from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. It’s part of their bottled and draft lineup, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Kyoto New Frontier is the first lager that Kyoto Brewing Company have made, with the brewery being better known for its Belgian spin on beers. Kyoto New Frontier is brewed using Hallertauer Mittelfruh for both bittering and aroma, and Spalter being used for aroma.

Kyoto New Frontier Aroma and Taste

Kyoto New Frontier poured out a very light golden straw colour with a big, fluffy white head on top that stayed the distance, leaving white streaks down the side of the glass during drinking. Kyoto New Frontier had a distinctly zesty lemon aroma to it, with some light dusting of malt pilsner bite to it. It was different from the usual mass macro lagers found in Japan, which tend to be more sweeter and more noble-like in terms of hop aroma – I just wish that Kyoto New Frontier was being drunk on a summer’s day as the fruitiness, and light dusting of malts, seemed perfect for that.

The body was crisp from start to finish – another reason to be drinking Kyoto New Frontier on a summer’s day. The zesty lemon was vibrant when both chilled and when the beer had warmed up and contrasted nicely against the slight cracker-like flavour in the body. The flavours were straight-forward – what do you really expect from a lager – though there was just a faint hint of phenols when Kyoto New Frontier had warmed up. But by that point, it was a bit too late to really have noticed it.

Kyoto New Frontier The Bottom Line

Kyoto New Frontier is a good change from the mass German lagers that dominate the Japanese market.
