AJB Raw Foeder Sour is a 5% sour from Anglo-Japanese Brewing Company, based in Nozawa, in Nagano, japan. It’s part of their bottled and draft lineup though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. As the name suggests, AJB Raw Foeder Sour is stored in foeders, basically giant wooden barrels.

AJB Raw Foeder Sour・AJBローフィーダーサワーAJB Raw Foeder Sour Aroma and Taste

AJB Raw Foeder Sour poured out a slightly hazy dark golden orange brown colour with a minimal amount of white head on top and no visible carbonation. It appeared as if AJB had taken this straight from the foeder and put it into a bottle without any carbonation from the tank or from bottle conditioning, hence the raw part. There was no discerinble malt or hop aroma coming off of AJB Raw Foeder Sour, just a slightly woody oak aroma with some vanilla, and a vinegar-like aroma to it. If you didn’t know that this was a sour before smelling, wow, you’re in the for a shock as it’s a potent aroma so don’t get your nose in there too much.

The taste is akin to sucking down a diluted solution of vinegar and water, that someone had left some oak chips in and a dab of vanilla bean. It’s a very peculiar tasting beer – if you can call it beer? There was no malt sweetness to it, no hop bitterness to it, but a vinegar-like flavour that lingered throughout drinking. I could imagine AJB Raw Foeder Sour going well with some berries or some tropical fruits to help take off some of that sour edge to it. The sourness lingered until the end and then carried on some more.

AJB Raw Foeder Sour The Bottom Line

If you like your beers vinegary and a little woody, then you’ll like AJB Raw Foeder Sour.
