Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe is a 7% American IPA from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap at their taproom. As the name suggests, Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe is a single-hop beer, with imported Simcoe hops used for this one.

Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe・トウキョウエールワークス307 IPA シムコ―Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe Aroma and Taste

Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe poured out a slightly hazy golden straw colour with a thin white head on top that faded quickly to a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. Unsurprisingly, Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe smelt like Simcoe hops – a bright citrus aroma with lemon and grapefruit coming through both when chilled and when warmed up. The malts brought a light dusting of pilsner bite to it, but it’s all about the Simcoe in this beer.

The initial bitterness to Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe was unsurprising – Simcoe is both a bittering and an aroma hop when used in IPAs – and it brought the same citrus flavours as the nose. Lemon and grapefruit being the main ones throughout drinking. For drinkers looking for something complex, Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe isn’t the beer you’re looking for – from start to finish it was all lemon and grapefruit with the usually bite from an IPA. That’s not meant to detract away from the fact that it’s very drinkable, and at 7%, dangerously so, but it’s not going to convince new converts from NE-IPAs and the such to go back to an “old” style of beer.

Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe The Bottom Line

Tokyo Aleworks 307 Simcoe shows off how good Simcoe can be.
