Nomcraft The Pits by Nomcraft Brewing

Nomcraft The Pits is a 5% session IPA from Nomcraft Brewing, based in Aridagwa, in Wakayama, Japan. It’s part of the kveik series of beers though its availability year-round is unknown at the time of writing, though it can be found in both bottles and on tap. Nomcraft The Pits is brewed using kveik, the Norwegian word for yeast – known for its fast fermentation at high temperatures, something that can hinder the fermentation process. In terms of hops, it’s unknown at the time of writing about what went into making Nomcraft The Pits.

Nomcraft The Pits Aroma and Taste

Nomcraft The Pits poured out a bright golden orange colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass. The aroma coming off though was actually what I expected from a beer that uses kveik yeast. Its aroma was of peaches and mango, with some orange and a light dusting of lemon thrown in. It seems that most of the aromas could be attributed to the yeast; however, the hops used brought the citrus flavours along. In terms of malt, the aroma was a light dusting of pilsner bite, but nothing too sweet or cloying.

The body had a light bitterness to it; though it was far less than I expected from a session IPA. Sometimes brewers try to jam in as much hops as they can, while dialing back the body in terms of malt, thus giving some hop bomb that lacks body; however, Nomcraft The Pits is equal parts body and hops. The yeast had once again brought the peach and mango flavours along in the body, with the same light lemon flavour coming through once Nomcraft The Pits had warmed up. On the other hand, the malt brought a touch more sweetness to the body, given the beer some body to support the flavours. At 5%, the beer had no detectable alcohol, nor were there any off flavours. The only downside I could find to Nomcraft The Pits was that it was pretty much gone as soon as I started drinking it.

Nomcraft The Pits The Bottom Line

Nomcraft The Pits is a light session IPA – good with some tropical flavours and is not a hop bomb.
