Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB is a 6% Extra Special Bitter from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and also on tap. What’s a flagon? Well it’s an old vessel used for beer that was supposedly said to hold just over a litre of beer – so maybe I got short changed on this bottle as it was only 330ml.

Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB Aroma and Taste

Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB poured out a dark ruby red colour with just a smidgen of slightly reddish-brown head on top that didn’t last long before fading to a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB was all about the malts – some malty and caramel-like aromas emanated off the beer, with a faint nuttiness to the beer too once it had warmed up. Hop-heads, or those for looking something “modern” may be left disappointed with Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB as there was nothing like that aroma present.

That same sweetness in the nose was present in the body – lots of malty flavours, with caramel and a roasted nuttiness too coming along for the ride. I was most surprised, but also happy, with how Tokyo Aleworks had not carbonated Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB to the max – it was much more in line with my image of an ESB and as such, easily drinkable both chilled and warmed up. The lingering malt flavours stayed through into the aftertaste with just a smidgen of butteriness being present.

Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB The Bottom Line

For me, Tokyo Aleworks Flagon Filler ESB is perhaps the closest I am going to get to an ESB in Japan. Top notch.
