West Coast That Magma is an 8% hazy double IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, Shizuoka in Japan. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether West Coast That Magma is part of their regular lineup or not, but it can be found in both cans and on tap at various places across Japan. It is unknown what hops went into making West Coast That Magma either.

West Coast That Magma

West Coast That Magma Aroma and Taste

West Coast That Magma poured out a light hazy honey colour with a massive plump white head on top. Now that could have been due to the IPA glass, or the life of the beer, but either way, it took a very long time for the head to settle down. The aroma though was incredible – a deep fruity one which was reminiscent of mango, orange, pineapple, and guava. Lots going on in West Coast That Magma but the aromas were nicely balanced and when West Coast That Magma had warmed up, paired off nicely with some subtle malt sweetness. At 8%, I was expecting some subtle booziness but it was well hidden by the tropical flavours.

In spite of the hoppy aromas coming on, there was barely any bitterness to West Coast That Magma – it was all about the tropical flavours. Lashings of mango with orange, and pineapple and guava. Once the beer had warmed up, there was a sweet pilsner bite to West Coast That Magma, though it was dominated by the hop flavours. Those same flavours lingered through into the aftertaste, leaving a sticky fruity texture on the palate.

West Coast That Magma The Bottom Line

It may not be lit, or fire, but West Coast That Magma is a great domestic hazy IPA.
