Standout Coffee & Beer in Shizuoka, Shizuoka

Standout Coffee & Beer The Bottom Line

With the plethora of craft beer bars in Shizuoka, it’s hard to standout (excuse the pun), but the varied tap list and beer flight option help Standout Coffee & Beer standout a little from the crowd. Besides that, and the option of Mexican food helps make it a worthwhile visit here. The whole place is non-smoking and has no table charges, with some of the menus being in English as well. If you are with friends that don’t want to drink, then Standout also has some coffee that is roasted in-store, though the opening hours do kind of inhibit the weekday lunch times for tourists. There is also some free WiFi as well.

Standout Coffee & Beer The Full Review

It was after a short walk around Sumpu Castle and a slightly warmer than usual afternoon in Shizuoka that I ventured across Standout Coffee & Beer, or Standout, on one of my meanders through the city. Not really knowing the city well, I had completely forgotten that I had been in the area the previous night until Google Maps came up with a message about Golden Nectar, an American craft beer bar, and would I like to add pictures?!

Standout opened in March 2018 in the northern part of the Koyamachi area of Shizuoka. It’s styled around being both a coffee shop and a bar, though most surprisingly, it’s not open during the day – a little bit unusual for a coffee shop but guess that’s the demands of the area. There are three floors to Standout, with the first floor being more bar-like than a coffee shop, but the top two floors more than make up for it with lots of comfy seats that make it more suited for casual drinking and chatting with friends. The whole building is non-smoking and there are no table charges either. If you’re looking for WiFi, then Standout can also help you out.

Now I was there for the beer and I had heard that Standout is one of the places where you can easily find Kyoto Brewing Company on tap with regularity and the rumours were right. With 8 taps of beer, on the day I went all were dedicated to Japanese craft beer, with Kyoto Brewing Company being strongly represented on tap. The beers come in two sizes: small (200ml) from ¥650 and large (400ml) from ¥850. There is also a three beer tasting set for ¥900, which gets you 3 x 150ml glasses of any beers on the menu; very good value for money. Unfortunately, there is no happy hour, nor can you get takeaway beers.

The menu at Standout is focussed around Mexican food, such as quesadillas, tacos, and small snacks; however, after eating a huge meal at Hug Hop, I kind of wish I had waited to come here now. Rather than the larger food, I plumped for some of the smaller things on the menu – chips! But next time I am in the area, I will definitely be coming here as it was the only place in the area that had Mexican food. Some of the menus are in English – just enough to order and get by though.
