Y Market Breaking Bonsai is 6.5% American IPA from Y Market Brewing, based in Nagoya, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative range, with this one being brewed with the Los Angeles’ brewery, Smog City. Y Market Breaking Bonsai takes its name from the phrase of “breaking bread”, i.e. to share something with someone, in this case with the shared object being the kettle the beer was brewed in. It is hopped using imported Simcoe from the USA, with Motueka and Waimea from New Zealand.

Y Market Breaking Bonsai Aroma and Taste

Y Market Breaking Bonsai poured out a light golden colour with a large fluffy white head on top that collapsed in on itself to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass, as well as some light white streaks that clung to the edge. The aroma coming off Y Market Breaking Bonsai was an initial dank, pine one, which was then followed up by some citrus dusting of lemon, grapefruit, and a hint of what could have been lime. Once Y Market Breaking Bonsai had warmed up though, the real aromas – the ones I had hoped would come through once I had heard about the hop bill – lots of guava, mango, and a smidgen of bubblegum too.

The hops brought an initial kick of bitterness to Y Market Breaking Bonsai that was short and sharp, before segueing into the hop bouquet of citrus flavours combined with the tropical fruit of those found in the nose. Everything was very well balanced which allowed the malt to bring a slight biscuity flavour to the body too. The lingering tropical fruits in the aftertaste led me to wanting more of Y Market Breaking Bonsai but I had only bought one can – a big mistake to make in hindsight.

Y Market Breaking Bonsai The Bottom Line

Y Market Breaking Bonsai is a really nice IPA and shows off the hops in the beer very nicely.
