West Coast The Prodigy is a 6.5% hazy IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Shizuoka, in Shizuoka, Japan. Itā€™s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both cans and on tap, with the former first coming out in January 2020. West Coast The Prodigy is brewed using Citra, Eukanot, and Mosaic hops. It takes its name from a supposed battle it faces with the West Coast The Nemesis ā€“ an imperial stout.

West Coast The Prodigy Aroma and Taste

Before drinking West Coast The Prodigy, I had a learnt a small technique about pouring hazy IPAs. Take the can out of the fridge, and turn it upside down ā€“ got to shake it to wake it. Donā€™t actually shake the can though ā€“ just turn it upside down to let the sediment move around before pouring. Why didnā€™t someone tell me this before?

West Coast The Prodigy poured out hazy yellow colour with a large frothy white head on top that stuck around for the duration of drinking. There was a massive amount of tropical fruit coming off West Coast The Prodigy ā€“ pineapple, mango, and a smooth lemon aroma all came through when the beer was cold, but became stronger as the beer warmed up.

There was very little bitterness throughout drinking West Coast The Prodigy. Instead, it had a smooth fruity body with the lashings of tropical fruit being balanced very nicely. Lots of pineapple, mango, and citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit also made an appearance. In terms of malts, there was just a smidgen of faint pilsner bite, along with a hint of creaminess ā€“ perhaps some lactose or oats had been used during the mashing. The tropical flavours stuck around in the end with a lingering tropical note to the end of the beer and a creamy note.

West Coast The Prodigy The Bottom Line

I really liked West Coast The Prodigy more than other beers Iā€™ve had from West Coast Brewing
