Vertere Rhoeas #3 is a 6.6% West Coast IPA from Vertere, based in Oku-tama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their canned series but can also be found on tap too. It’s brewed using Pale 2 row, Maris Otter, and Carapils, with Columbus, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops. It also contains pure lupulin powder from Simcoe hops.

Vertere Rhoeas #3 Aroma and Taste

Vertere Rhoeas #3 poured out a dark golden honey colour with a large plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass as the beer went down. The first thing you notice about the aroma of Vertere Rhoeas #3 is its dank piney nose – even when chillend, Vertere Rhoeas #3 reeks of dankness. Quite surprising really considering in the past, some of the Vertere beers have been much lighter in the nose. There was also a hint of citrus to the beer once it had warmed up, along with some lactose-like quality – perhaps because I have grown to associate Vertere with the addition of lactose in their beers then maybe my brain tricked me into thinking there had been some added into this.

The dank piney notes carried on well into the body with their flavours lingering way into the aftertaste. The citrus flavours were nicely balanced but could have done with a tad more punch to get through the dankness of Vertere Rhoeas #3. Once it had been giving the chance to warm up, then Vertere Rhoeas #3 also brought some alcohol heat to it as well. The main downside to the beer was as weird sulphur funk in the body of the beer – perhaps the boil hadn’t been long enough to get rid of the notes.

Vertere Rhoeas #3 The Bottom Line

Vertere Rhoeas #3 is a good little effort on a West Coast IPA.
