Ottotto Brewery Shibuya The Bottom Line

Ottotto Brewery Shibuya is a weird one – it’s hard to say whether I really liked it or not, because the previous place disappointed me so much that anything that came after it would probably have been a better choice. The main disappointment to Ottotto Brewery Shibuya is that unlike the other location at Ottotto Brewery Hamamatsucho, there doesn’t actually appear to be a brewery on site. The beers are ok – nothing to really write about at the time of this article; however, they are reasonably priced considering Ottotto Brewery Shibuya is in the heart of Shibuya. The whole place is non-smoking but there are some smoking booths by the front entrance, has no table charge, and prices include tax too. There is also some free WiFi and a small outside drinking area too. The staff also tried to use English with me when I was there, even when I spoke to them in Japanese so kudos for them on trying to help make things go smoother too.

Ottotto Brewery Shibuya The Full Review

So it seems Tokyo has a new chain of bars coming through it, with Ottotto Brewery making (slow) in-roads into the craft beer scene. Ottotto Brewery Shibuya opened in March 2019, in the Dogenzaka area of Shibuya, better know for the plethora of love hotels in the area than its actual (slowly) growing craft beer scene. We won’t judge you for getting lost and walking into a sex shop while you’re trying to find this place – seriously, we won’t. It’s not like we’re stalking you.

Ottotto Brewery Shibuya is located about 10 minutes from the melee that is Shibuya Station and it’s actually hard to miss it when you’re walking down the street – it’s not every day you see a giant blue elephant sticking out the front of a shop, but we’re in Shibuya, so that’s by no means the strangest thing in the area. Ottotto Brewery Shibuya has space for about 80 people inside, with 10 or so seats at the counter, and another 70 dotted around. There is a small deck out the front where you can drink too – and it’s non-smoking too. There are three booths inside where you can smoke, but when we went, we couldn’t smell anything at all, even when the door to one of the booths opened up.

Ottotto Brewery Shibuya has 10 taps of craft beer on – with most, if not all, being their own offerings. It was disappointing not to see an actual brewery inside the building – if you’re going to put brewery in the name then at least show us the brewery! Beers come in two sizes: medium (265ml) from 560 and regular (435ml) from ¥860. There is also a three beer tasting set which gets you 3 x 150ml beers for ¥980. The in-house beers were ok – not going to win any medals – but they are drinkable and were at least representative of the style they were supposed to be on the menu. However, there is no happy hour option, but they do have some special early bird set that gets you some snacks and a beer for ¥880.

Like the other branches of the Ottotto chain, there’s your basics of chips and some charcuterie style meats, as well as large meals, such as hamburgers. We plumped for the chips – what else did you expect – but the appetiser plate (zensai in Japanese) seemed quite appetising too. There’s a limited selection of vegetarian food too, so the veggie readers among us will be happy to come here and get some good too.

It appears to me the pub crawl for this area of Shibuya would be Goodbeer Faucets (for its Happy Hour), to Mikkeller Tokyo, then to the Ottotto Brwy., and concluding at The Aldgate (where there is a discount on food with this coupon).

Time for me to speak up. !=)}
I am on the premises as I type. Unfortunately, there is now a ¥390 “cover charge“, which gets you a small plate of peanuts, cashews, and pistachios. The coaster boasts Sky Blue Elephant pilsner beer, but it does not seem to be available here in Shibuya. I was thus served a 5.0% pale ale. (That’s OK.)
I submit the way to find here is to go up the avenue leading to the MEGA Don Quijote store. When you reach its entrance, at that traffic signal, make a left turn onto a narrow street. Go past the Wild One sensual boutique, and the Taco Bell. It will be on your right.
