Cafe Raisin-Dou The Bottom Line

Cafe Raisin-Dou is a homey, comfortable craft beer bar with a friendly owner. It’s very close to the station, although it can be a bit difficult to find. They have a decent selection of Japanese and European beers, bottled or on tap. Beers are a little pricey, but there really aren’t any other options for craft beer in the area, so if you ever find yourself craving a good beer in Ibaraki this is the place to go.

Cafe Raisin-Dou The Full Review

I decided to stop into this bar for the first time after a work meeting brought me to the area. Looking on Beer Tengoku’s Craft Beer of Japan Map, I noticed there really aren’t any other craft beer choices for several train stops in any given direction. I’m glad it appeared on the Maps extension, because searching for this particular bar on Google Maps yielded zero results. I was able to find the bar after a short period of wandering around the general area; it’s on the basement floor of the building, and I couldn’t find a listing of shops in the building until I was basically right across the hall from it. Unfortunately, because of its literal underground location, I had extremely poor phone reception while there and they do not offer their own free wi-fi, so phone addicts beware.

I arrived shortly after their opening time, so I had the bar all to myself, though it looks like there was room for about 10 customers at the bar. The owner was very friendly and welcoming, even after I told him I don’t speak much Japanese. He clearly didn’t speak much English, but was happy to attempt it for the sake of small talk and to tell me about an upcoming craft beer festival in Osaka Castle Park.

They offer 7 beers on tap, 5 Japanese and 2 European, each available ½ pint, ¾ pint or full pint sizes. Prices vary depending on the type of beer you want. When I was there the cheapest was the Kilkenny Irish Ale at ¥650 for a ½ pint and ¥970 for a pint, and the most expensive was Hop Kotan Brewery’s Life Is A Journey at ¥850 for a ½ pint and ¥1380 a pint. I ended up going with the Ushitora Brewery Lime Brut IPA and Hop Kotan Brewery Life Is A Journey (pictured below), both of which were great.

A list of bottled beers for sale can be found above the bar. The majority of the bottles available were Belgian beers, though they did also have a few from the US. Prices for the bottles also range, but are about on par with the draft prices. A separate drink menu included a list of cocktails available, so if you have a friend who doesn’t like beer this place should still be accommodating to both of you.I can’t vouch for the quality of the food at the bar, but their food menu includes a lot of options at more reasonable prices than the beers. All menus are in Japanese, although they’re neatly printed so you could Google translate them if needed, or, if he’s not too busy, you could ask the owner to help you at as he was extremely accommodating.
