Kakegawa Herb Hunt is a 7.5% spice / herb beer from Kakegawa Farm Brewing, based in Kakegawa, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap in select places. Kakegawa Herb Hunt is brewed using a variety of herbs, with rosemary, coriander, cardamom, and thyme with the base beer being styled along a Belgian tripel.

Kakegawa Herb Hunt Aroma and Taste

Kakegawa Herb Hunt poured out a dark hazy golden orange colour with a medium amount of thick, sticky white head on top that clung to the side of the glass. The herby aroma was potent – the rosemary and cardamom being the two strongest when Kakegawa Herb Hunt was chilled, though the thyme did come through a bit once the beer had been given a chance to warm up. There was a coriander spiciness to the beer, but that aroma only really came through muddled with a phenolic heat too.

There was no bitterness to Kakegawa Herb Hunt. Instead, there was a strong herby taste that was potent, but thankfully restrained. No pot pourri going on here. The phenolic flavours were present from start to finish. However, the weirdest thing about Kakegawa Herb Hunt was how balanced the herbs were, considering the variety of them in the beer. There was a distinct alcohol heat to the beer in the aftertaste, and it lingered too.

Kakegawa Herb Hunt The Bottom Line

Kakegawa Herb Hunt could have been a lot worse than it was. It’s an interesting beer, but not enough for me to try again.
