Gather @ Eating House The Bottom Line

Gather @ Eating House offers up a solid, if uninspiring, lineup of craft beer throughout the year that supports some local breweries. Moreover, if you’ve got a pet, i.e. a dog, and want to drink outside with them in Yokohama, then Gather @ Eating House is also a good choice. However, for the craft beer hunter (you know who you are), then you’d be better giving Gather @ Eating House a wide berth. This place is for people just wanting to dabble their toes into craft beer and should be treated as such. The whole place is non-smoking, has free WiFi, no table charge, bilingual menus, no table charge, and also outside drinking. The main downside though is the price of a beer – making it one of the most expensive in Yokohama.

Gather @ Eating House The Full Review

World Porter’s, the stalwart department store on a man-made island in the middle of Yokohama bay, has seen so many changes over the years that it has been hard to keep up with. Gather @ Eating House opened up in the far end of the building, encompassing what used to be a smaller wine and beer shop and a few cafes. It opened in November 2018, actually without much fanfare or PR – something unusual for a place so large. But more of that later.

Gather @ Eating House is located about 10 minutes from both Minatomirai station and Bashamichi station on the Minatomirai line – so best put on some walking shoes. Gather @ Eating House is huge. There are no two ways about it – this place makes all craft beer bars in Japan seem like El Nubichinom. There is space for…. 250 people…. seated, which includes 150 or so people inside at various table configurations and counter seating, and also a terraced area outside. The whole place is non-smoking and also has no table charge. Gather @ Eating House also advertises itself as dog friendly but the only part that is the outside terrace area. There is also some free Wifi available too but for some reason, Gather @ Eating House has suffered from the fate of the TV – six huge TVs adorn the walls, but without sound, they are just a mere distraction than actually serving a purpose.

There are 20 taps of craft beer on Gather @ Eating House, with a heavy leaning towards domestic breweries, and the others being American based. The main 15 taps do not seem to change throughout the year, with Yokohama and Kanagawa breweries heavily featured on the menu, and a few non-Kanagawa based breweries on the guest beer menu. Beers come in two sizes: small (275ml) from ¥780 to ¥980, while large beers (414ml) are ¥980 to ¥1,180 with guest beers being at the higher end of those prices. The prices don’t include tax and the beers aren’t served very well to be honest, so make sure you try to get them topped up. There is no happy hour nor are there any beer flights available – a shame really with so many beers on the menu. There’s also some bottles on the menu – but pictures speak a thousand words, so let’s move on. Seriously, don’t order the bottles!

Gather @ Eating House should be praised though for having a menu that encompasses both vegetarians and meat eaters – there is so much on the menu that you’re bound to find something you can eat. The tapas, while cheap, is enough for one person to eat. The meat is on the pricey side for what you get, but apparently it is aged in-house – not many craft beer bars can say that. All the menus are fully bilingual, with the tablet switching at a flick of a button. Just be prepared to wait though for your food – yes, even the tapas takes time to make.
