Distant ShoresFrom Tokyo With Love, also known as Distant Shores Red Rye IPA, is a 7% rye IPA from Distant Shores Brewing, based in Higashiyama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative range, and can be found on tap at selected bars across Kanto and Japan. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love is a one-off beer or if it will be released again.

Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love Aroma and Taste

Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love poured out a deep copper red colour with a thin white head on top – another great pour from Nao and Steph at Two Fingers (all of their beers get poured like this!). Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love had a spicy peppery aroma to it, that was punctuated by a buttery, plasticy aroma to it that smelt a bit like the aroma in the Distant Shores Galaxy Haze. It’s definitely not to do with the hop aromas, so something clearly happened to this beer.

The body started with a light dusting of rye but the buttery plastic flavours just seemed to linger on throughout drinking. The lingering butteriness, for want of a better expression, reminded me of popcorn that had been doused in the fake butter. Bearable in small quantities but anymore than a handful and it just makes it too hard to drink. Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love’s aftertaste left a putrid – the classic beer description is baby vomit but never having tasted that (only smelt it!) it was not a flavour that I wanted more of.

Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love The Bottom Line

Distant Shores From Tokyo With Love suffers from the same fate as the other DSB beers we’ve had. Can’t recommend this beer at all.
