Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL is an 8.3% double India pale lager from Hop Kotan Brewing, based in Kamifurano, in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in bars across Japan. The secret part of the beer? Noone knows what hops are used in it, as they are a Secret belonging to Vic nudge nudge, besides the brewer and brewery.

Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL Aroma and Taste

Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL poured out a relative clear light golden straw colour with a small amount of pure white head on top – again, thanks to the great beers at Two Fingers in Ikebukuro. The aroma though was a beautiful merging of piney, herbal notes along with a slight sweet biscuity aroma from the malt. These aromas became more pronounced as Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL warmed up, but to be honest, it didn’t last too long.

At 8%, I was expecting an alcohol hit off of Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL, but it didn’t come. There was a dank piney resinous flavour to the body, with a smooth bitterness to it that the sweet biscuit body carried away. Hop Kotan Kotan’s Secret Double IPL was incredible drinkable – aren’t most beers? – and it finished off with a lingering tart pineapple and lemon twist that appeared once it had warmed up. Shame there wasn’t enough at the end to warm up.
