Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale is a 7% brown ale from Baird Beer, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of craft beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap. It was one of their first beers on sale and is brewed with Maris Otter, wheat, caramel, and roast wheat along with a variety of whole leaf hops, though which ones are unknown and I could swear they change throughout the year. Like the rest of the range of Baird Beer’s offering the name also has a meaning with Bryan Baird oft being referred to as “angry boy” by his mother, according to the Baird Beer website.

A tad stronger than your usual brown ale.

Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale Aroma and Taste

Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale is often a go-to-beer for me when I visit the Baird Taprooms. I like their IPAs, but a brown ale is difficult to find in Japan, and like ambers, offer up a nice sweet backbone with some bitterness from hops from time-to-time. Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale is no English brown ale either – it definitely has an American influence and that is noticeable straight from the get-go. It poured out a reddish-brown colour with a frothy white head on top that lingered, before collapsing to a thin layer of bubbles around the edge of the glass. The hoppy aroma is prominent from the first sniff, with hints of a grapefruit and citrus punch and spicy kick, along with a caramel malt backbone.

Drinking Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale cold is similar to drinking an amber ale – it had very similar qualities to an American amber, though it’s when Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale warms up that it excels. The taste isn’t too dissimilar to the aroma with a sweet, hoppy edge to it with citrus, and for this, Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale is probably the hoppiest brown ale I’ve had – not to say there aren’t even hoppier beers out there. It was quite dry throughout drinking and the finishing flurry of citrus grapefruit and sweet caramel left me wanting me.

Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale The Bottom Line

Baird Angry Boy Brown Ale is a great little beer that I’ve enjoyed mostly on tap – and now bottles as well.
