Y Market W-IPL by Y Market Brewing

Y Market W-IPL is an 8% double India pale lager from Y Market Brewing, based in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition bottled range, though it has been seen on tap across Japan. Y Market W-IPL is brewed using the same base as the Y Market Session IPL, though the amount of malts have been doubled up and it also has US Citra, US Simcoe, and US Mosaic hops used throughout brewing and also dry hopping, with Y Market W-IPL being brewed at Gotemba Kogen, rather than at the brewpub. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Y Market W-IPL is a one-off batch or how to pronounce the name (is it wipple or double IPL?)

Lots of fruitiness in this one.

Y Market W-IPL Aroma and Taste

Y Market W-IPL poured out a hazy golden orange colour with a large, fluffy white head on top, which collapsed leaving some sticky bubbles on the side of the glass. It had a large hoppy aroma of floral notes, paired up with a citrus lemon and grapefruit aroma, with a dank resiny pine aroma coming off too. There was just the merest hint of caramel malts from the beer but the hop aroma was incredible.

The bottle says 8% but the Y Market Brewing website states their kegged beer having an abv of 8.9% – and you know what? In both, the alcohol is so well hidden, it’s dangerous. The dank piney resiny nose comes through riding the tailcoats of the bitterness, but the amount of fruit jammed into the flavours is amazing. Lots of passion fruit, grapefruit, lemon, and peaches that are followed up with a subtle edge of sweetness from the caramel malts. Y Market W-IPL had a medium-dry body, with definite stickiness residing on the tongue after drinking.

Y Market W-IPL The Bottom Line

Y Market W-IPL goes to show that Y Market Brewing can make some excellent beers – as long as they stay away from the black malts.
