Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 is a 5.5% American pale ale from Baird Beer, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their autumn seasonal lineup, in conjunction with the hop harvest in Japan. The “wet hop” refers to using the whole hops cones that have not been dried before being used in the boil and in dry hopping, in this case Cascade hops from Yamagata and Centennial hops from Miyagi. Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 can be found in bottles and on tap at the time of writing. If you’ve read our review of the Baird Shinshuwase Wet Hop Ale 2015 then you’ll know that this is a one-off brew, so get in quick.

Brewed using hops from Yamagata and Miyagi.

Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 Aroma and Taste

Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 poured out a light copper amber colour with a large frothy white head on top, which lasted for quite a while. The most surprising thing about the beer was how clear the body was – quite surprising for a Baird Beer as they are usually unfiltered. I wonder what changed here? The aroma was quite strong, with a malt forward nose of caramel and biscuit, though citrus lemony tones came through nicely once it had warmed up slightly.

It was an easy-drinking beer from the get go – crisp with a slightly bitter bite to it that didn’t overpower the senses, nor linger for too long on the palate. There was a hint towards the sweetness of the beer as well, with a rounded caramel edge just coming through during the end of drinking. It’s a very drinkable beer but didn’t really progress much further than citrus and malt.

Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 The Bottom Line

Baird Tohoku Wet Hop Ale 2016 was a solid drinking beer, but nothing surprising.
