YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen One Paragraph

YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen is definitely a work in progress and a much needed review is needed. While it’s in a good location, the lack of any real decent beer at a good price is disappointing. While it’s nice to see some more brewpubs coming through, this one was a major disappointment considering the fanfare behind it. I guess the good things to say about it is that all the prices include tax, there isn’t a table charge either and the menus are fully bilingual too. Don’t go expecting much and you’ll be fine.

Lots of fermenters but not much going on.

YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen Full Review

Brewpubs could be the craft beer trend for 2016 with numerous ones opening up across Japan it seems every month. YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen opened up in April 2016 to little fanfare, almost sneaking under the radar until a friend liked their Facebook page. The next thing you know, updates flowed and YYG Brewery was open for business.

YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen is located on the west side of JR Shinjuku / Yoyogi stations and can easily be reached from both stations.  It can also be reached from Shinjuku Shinsen Metro station though I hadn’t heard of that place before today. The brewery and kitchen are stretched over two floors with the brewery located on the first floor and the kitchen itself on the seventh floor. Unfortunately, on the day I went the seventh floor was closed for a private party and wouldn’t be opened all night. The first floor also has, and something we here at BeerTengoku love, an outside drinking area too. The first floor has six tables and plenty of space for standing, while the wooden deck outside has space for about twenty people seated outside, with rain covers as well. While there is no WiFi in the bar, there is also no table charge either.

The brewery can be viewed from inside though there wasn’t much going on when we arrived. Something must have been happening though during the week as the brewers at YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen are already on their 7th batch of beers for 2016. The beer menu is in both Japanese and in English and includes full details about their beers. The pictures to the right show what kind of glass the beer is going to be served in and all are priced at ¥800 for about 300ml. Thankfully the prices include tax as well. However, the beers were not really that good. While they were drinkable, they lacked carbonation and are very much a work in progress.

The bar part to YYG Brewery and Beer Kitchen doesn’t have any food besides some mixed nuts and an otsumami plate as well and that’s it. So if you’re hungry, you can either pop to the FamilyMart on the corner or try and get a seat on the seventh floor.

It’s a very interesting arrangement with the bar n the 1st floor and the restaurant on the 7th, which is surprisingly nicely done (including the very modern chandelier).
The food was good as was the Sessionable Koshu-Kaido IPA they had
It had a nice east-coast bitterness and full flavour.

I sat on the first floor at one of the little round tables inside. There is a little shelf that goes around the table slightly underneath the tabletop. I guess this is for salarymen to stash their bags away. Anyway, I set my beer down and and tried to seat myself when my knee banged into that shelf, spilling a portion of my pricey beer. A poor design. Or maybe my legs are too long.
I had the brown ale, which was fine. But I couldn’t get over being annoyed with the table & spillage.
