Harvestmoon Brown Ale by Harvestmoon

Harvestmoon Brown Ale is a 5.5% American brown ale from Harvestmoon, based in Chiba. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and is brewed using American hops rather than British hops, as was traditional. At the time of writing, Harvestmoon Brown Ale can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan.

Not quite brown, more like a reddish colour.

Harvestmoon Brown Ale Aroma and Taste

Growing up in the UK and hearing people talk about browns, milds, and ESBs has meant that those styles of beers have forever been stereotyped as “old man beers”. While that does sound derogatory, it isn’t meant to be as those men provided hours upon hours of stories. With Harvestmoon Brown Ale, I was expecting a brown beer, though it poured out more of a reddish colour than brown, which does fit the new American style of the beer but left me underwhelmed. It had a strong caramel aroma to it, along with a slight piney aroma to it that faded very quickly.

It was readily apparent in the body that Harvestmoon Brown Ale was an American brown ale as the hops imparted a funky citrus bitterness to the initial flavour. I guess it was but it was more unexpected than anything else. The body brought with it a sweetness from the caramel which was neither overpowering nor floundering to compete with the bitterness from the hops. It finished off with a sweet fruity finish with just a smidgen of bitterness on the palate.

Harvestmoon Brown Ale One Line Review

Harvestmoon Brown Ale is ok, I guess. Nothing exciting here to get worked up about or so bad that you would pour it away.
