Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale by Hansharo Beer

Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale is a 5% Belgian pale ale by Hansharo Beer, based in Izunokuni city, Shizuoka. It’s part of their spring seasonal lineup of craft beer and can be found in bottles and on tap. Hansharo Beer took their pale ale and used Belgian yeast in the primary fermentation stages, instead of their usual in-house strain.

An interesting idea but soon forgotten.

Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale Aroma and Taste

Man, am I glad that I took notes for this beer down. It poured out a cloudy dark golden brown colour with a decent amount of clean, frothy white head ale for a pale ale. Belgian yeasts seem to be an in-vogue process at the moment with numerous craft beer breweries in Japan employing its usage in their regular pale ales. Hansharo Beer is not different but with this Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale, the addition of Belgian yeast didn’t seem to make much of an impact in the aroma. It smelt a tad citrusy with hints of caramel malts and a slight musty aroma but was that from the yeast or the beer itself?

While the Belgian yeast flavours were more present in the body, they were still much fainter than other Belgian pale ales I’ve had. The citrus aromas were present in the body, imparting an edge of bitterness to it that wasn’t potent nor astringent. Nor was the caramel flavour overly sweet or sickly. However, that Belgian yeast flavour could not make its way through the flavours unless you were really looking out for it. Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale finished off with a slight bitter edge that quickly faded away before being forgotten.

Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale The Bottom Line

Hansharo Belgian Pale Ale, though refreshing, is a forgettable beer once drunk.
