Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale is a 4.5% Belgian witbier from Far Yeast Brewing Company that is part of their limited edition range of beers. While it is a Belgian ale, rather than using orange and coriander, which are usually used in the brewing process of a witbier, Far Yeast Beer Company have decided to use yuzu and sansho, or Japanese pepper. It was first released on November 27th 2015 though it’s unknown whether it will get a release in future years. It can be found in bottles and on draft too.

Spicy and fruity – not what I was expecting from this beer at all.

Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale Aroma and Taste

The first thing you notice about Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale when you pour it out is the lack of life in it. It’s not like I didn’t try but it was so limp that I was surprised it mustered the effort to come out of the bottle. When it did get into the glass, the spices and fruits sucker punched me in. I have to admit, I didn’t read the label before trying this beer and was surprised when I got a huge hit of yuzu and spiciness to it. I guess if I had know that yuzu and sansho were included then it would have been different. There was also some sweetness to it as well with a slight hint of caramel to it as well.

However, and there has to be a however, the body is where Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale goes wrong. While I usually like yuzu OR sansho in a beer, having both of them in Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale, and to a large extent as well, meant that the pair were continually competing with one another. First, it was the citrus punch, then a spiciness that mellows out through the aftertaste then back to the citrus punch followed by spiciness which carries on until the end.

Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale One Line Review

Far Yeast Session Belgian Ale promised so much but ended up just being a competition between the yuzu and sansho. Not worth paying the price for this beer.
