Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner is a 5% pilsner made by Baeren Beer. It’s a seasonal beer though when it is released is unknown as Baeren haven’t listed it on their website at all. For those that don’t homebrew or know much about the beer making process, is that it is made from the first pass off the water as it meanders through the crushed malts, bringing out the sugars and proteins contained within. The sparging process, that is the secondary passing of fresh water, draws out the remnants that may have been left behind but also may bring out some weird flavours contained that may not be of benefit to the beer. To save money, or perhaps maximize efficiency, brewers may combine the first wort and second passing to increase the amount of available wort, though reducing the quality of the beer. Let’s drinking…

Big, fluffy head on top of a crisp body.

Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner Aroma and Taste

The head off of Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner was massive and I wasn’t even trying. Straight away, this beer was lively and promised much, yet I couldn’t work out when it was released. Nothing on the Baeren Beer homepage and nothing much on the Japanese side of the net – don’t go there late at night! The aroma was good with a nice blend of crisp hops and a sweet malt backbone that wasn’t strong but by no means a mere oversight in the smells. The liveliness of Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner was evident as I sat and watched the plethora of bubbles whoosh up from the bottom of the glass, racing to add to the already plump head.

Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner is a pilsner though what kind is unknown; however, I suspect from the aromas and taste that it is German-style pilsner as the malts were as sweet in the body as they were in the aroma, and the hops produced a sharp bitterness in the aftertaste to boot. It was a bit on the thin side in that it was a little watery for my liking but that is just a mere complaint on a nice beer.

Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner One Line Review

Baeren Only First Wort Premium Pilsner isn’t going to win any awards soon but it’s a good pilsner that could do with some tweaking in the hops and malt department.

They used to make an excellent flavourful pilsner (it was my fav of their range but this was maybe 8 or more years back) and the best export lager in japan – the classic. However, despite them saying it hasn’t changed, I’m adamant that it has. It’s nothing like it was. This pilsner is a new special batch. Baeren make so many of them. Great little brewery up in the sticks of Iwate and worth a visit, especially at one of their events. Small, family style team. They can make some good beers. Good schwarz and bitter among others.I no longer seek out the classic as it’s gotten smoother, softer and sweeter IMO. It used to be good, hoppy and sharply bitter. No longer. Hasn’t changed, my arse.
