Craft Beer Izuya in Shinagawa-Ku, Tokyo

Urgh, sometimes I hate trying to find new places, and never more so than when it’s heavily raining in rainy season and the store has no discernable front it. I had some time to kill before meeting a friend at Transit, about a five-minute walk in the direction of the station and this place came up first on Google when I searched for “craft beer shops Hatanodai”. So off I went in search of Craft Beer Izuya, getting soaking wet and grumpy as I plodded up and down the shopping street.

Eventually, I came across Craft Beer Izuya. The only reason I hadn’t discovered it early it seemed was:

a) there was a truck outside the front of the shop, blocking the entrance.

b) when I walked past it again, it was “closed” for deliveries.

Not the most auspicious of starts to a review and by now my legs were soaked and I was tired. Transit was going to open up in five minutes, so why bother hanging around here, waiting for a shop to possibly “open” up? Well, for starters, Craft Beer Izuya is perhaps one of the coolest beer shops I have been to. Ever. The long concrete passage that leads you lulls you into a false sense of security. “Oh crap, I’ve walked into some minimalist shop that uses concrete to look cool and hip.” As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted by a Thunderbirds model and other plastic model toys the owner has made.

Craft Beer Izuya Beer

A small, but varied selection of Japanese craft beer.

Look right, and you see the fridges of craft beer that adorn the wall, just next to Japanese nihonshu, also known as sake, next to bottles of shochu too. In those fridges also lie some taps of craft beer that you can drink on the premises as well. Moreover, any beer that you purchase can also be drunk there, but you do have to pay anywhere between a ¥100~¥200 “opening” charge to drink on site. A little pricey but if you’re desperate for a beer, then it’s worth paying.

There was a decent selection of beers on site, with Shiga Kogen, Coedo, Minoh, Fujizakura Heights, Iwate Kura, Hitachino Nest and Ise Kadoya among others. Craft Beer Izuya also stocks limited editions beers from those breweries at prices comparable to online stores, if not cheaper.
