Blue Room Craft Beer and Pizza in Kamakura

Blue Room Outside

Doubt you’ll see this from outside, but Blue Room stands out from the rest of the shops in this building.

Komachi-dori in Kamakura may be the shoppers’ paradise at the weekend but early evening, bars open up and people stand outside trying to entice customers to rest those weary feet with some beer. Blue Room is on the same street as those bars and izakayas though it is hidden upstairs on the second floor of a nondescript building on Komachi-dori that is a blink-and-miss-it. While Kamakura is yet to fully embrace the craft beer movement, Blue Room is running at the forefront of the change.

Blue room bar

Not so blue here, but the counter definitely had a blue tinge to it.

Blue Room is a tiny little place that can accommodate 15 people seated at best, with a fair few number for standing, though the day we went, there were only three other people in the bar. The week before, there were a gig on from some local musicians that took up the large seated area and left the bar area with the only seating area. As soon as you walk in though, Blue Room feels welcoming and cosy though there may not be much atmosphere. The Blue Room, well, it got its name it seems from the blue decor. If you don’t like blue in any shape or form, then it’s best you don’t go along because blue is every-bloody-where. Besides the beer.

Safe but a good selection of beers.
Blue Room Sample
From L to R: Hideji Kinkan Lager, Outside Australian IPA, Baird Shimaguni Stout

Though we counted ten taps, there were only six on the go when we went, and three of those were standard Baird Beer brews, plus two Miyagi beers along with an Outsider Brewing tap as well. It was not an extravagant nor diverse range of beers; however, the safety of the beers was well-selected as it meant there was decent selection of styles and taste. Beers came in three sizes: a pint glass, 500ml, costs ¥1080, while a 1/2 pint, 250ml, costs ¥540, with both prices including tax. There is also a three-set sampler option where you get three 1/4 pint glasses for ¥1080. We plumped for the last option as we were indecisive and wanted to drink everything.

Celery marinated in garlic oil. Simple bit yummy.

The food at Blue Room varies from simple tapas style food, such as celery marinated in garlic oil, to pasta and pizza dishes that are prepared in front of you. For such a small shop, we were impressed with Blue Room’s full size pizza oven that occupies about 1/8th of the bar/cooking area along with an area for base preparation. Next time we come, we’ll definitely be having some of the pizza here though the prices ranged quite drastically. Tax was included in the price of both beer and food and there was also no table charge! Yay!

Blue Room One Paragraph Review

If you’re looking for a safe place to try some craft beer then Blue Room is right up your avenue. After a long day of temples and shopping on one of Japan’s busiest pedestrian streets, Blue Room is a good excuse to dive off of the main street and relax with some beer and jazz. You never know, you might get lucky with a live gig.
