Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner is a late review of a special beer from Tamamura Honten that was first released in June 2014. Why did it take me so long to review it? Well, I had other beers but this one is a 5% pilsner. Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner is brewed using a cross between an American and Czech idea followed up with some Tamamura Honten beer ideas to produce a new style beer.

Bitter is an understatement

Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner Aroma and Taste

Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner was a lively beer, as can be seen in the picture above, and produced a large amount of fluffy white head that dissipated pretty slowly. It was probably quicker to watch paint dry than to watch it settle. The body was a clear, golden colour that shimmered nicely in the late afternoon sun peeking through the doors. The aroma though was not too dissimilar to a funky IPA with some light floral notes to it. Nothing offensively bitter by this but neither was it pilsner like either.

It’s in the body though where Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner got me as the bitterness kicked in straight away with the hops really producing something to screw my face up but it was a clean bitterness that quickly faded away to a crisp, refreshing, lip-smacking beer. The refreshing tartness lent itself nicely to the hot spring day I drank this on though the Shiga Kogen BLOND I had before it meant the bitterness could have been stronger.

Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner One Line Review

Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner is not so much a ground-breaking pilsner as the label states but it is still a nice refreshing beer for a session.

Where to Buy Shiga Kogen Nigai Lager Pilsner

Shiga Kogen BLOND can be bought from the Tamamura Honten online store here if you send them an email. We’ve also seen it in Liquors Hasegawa and also Yamaoka too. If you are in Shimokitazawa, Le Petit L’Ouest also has it in stock too.
