Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale is a surprise beer here at BeerTengoku as we picked it up unknowingly at the Keyaki Hiroba Beer Festival at the beginning of October. First brewed in 2011, Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale won the gold award at the International Beer Cup in 2014 in the American Style category.

It’s supposed to be red.

Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale Aroma and Taste

Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale poured out a cloudy deep red verging on brown colour that looked lighter at the bottom than at the top. A nice frothy head balanced itself on top that lingered as the beer went. The aroma coming of off this beer was deep and fairly strong but with an IBU of 85, it wasn’t surprising. Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale is very hoppy, enough to knock you back if you are not expecting it. Lots of grapefruit and caramel to this beer too.

With an IBU of 85, it shouldn’t be surprising that this is a hoppy and bitter beer. The rich malt flavour comes through and balances well with the citrusy taste.  It’s a rounded beer that finishes off with a slightly taste but not too strong on the palate.

Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale One-Line Review

Ise Kadoya Imperial Red Ale blind-sided me as amber ales in Japan tend to err on the sweet side but the added hoppiness in this beer works extremely well.
