Ah, Sapporo and Sapporo Susukino Beer. A delightful place to visit in summer or winter. Such an organised city with the regular blocks and layout that reminds me of Western cities. Sapporo is also host to two of my favourite places in Japan: the Sapporo beer factory with lamb barbeque, and Susukino alley, a small area that comes to life during the night, filled with office workers and students chatting and drinking the night away.

The bright lights and smells of Susukino couldn’t possibly fit into a can?

Sapporo Susukino Beer  Aroma and Taste

So I was excited to see this beer in my local Queens Isetan in Yokohama. It isn’t everyday that Hokkaido beer, let alone craft beer, makes it down south. Reasonably priced at ¥292 yen, I thought I was on to a winner here.

Except I wasn’t.

As it sat in the glass, it looked flat. Hang on, I thought this was supposed to be a pilsner? It looked like a classic pilsner, smelt like peat with a slight undertone of coal to the taste which led to a wheaty aftertaste that lingered a little too long. The lack of life in the beer meant the head quickly dissipated away and left with something disappointing.

It’s hard to say anything good about this beer. I mean, the can is nice and pretty. The million lights landscape view, I guess, is well designed.

Give this one a miss as it’s a case of brewing a beer for the sake of it.

Im looking to get some of it here in New York State inthe US. If you (Or anyone who reads this) would like to set up a way to make that happen. Please contact me. My username on Facebook is susukino (half the reason why I want some of this beer!)

Good luck.
The best way to check is to see if you local Japanese store can get it imported.
Maybe in the future, if there is enough demand for it, then we could enter the export business.
