Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast is a 9% imperial stout from Minoh Beer, based in Mino, in Osaka, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast was brewed in conjunction with Mikkeller Beer for the Mikkeller Beer Celebration Tokyo event in 2022 and is brewed using anko, also known as sweet bean paste. The coffee used in Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast comes from Takamura Coffee, a roastery in Osaka, who used a cold brew method to extract the coffee flavours.

Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast : Aroma & Taste

Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast poured out a thick, gloppy black colour with a massive amount of tan head on top that stuck to the side of the glass. If you’ve got a moustache, then you might find some of this beer is left over in it after drinking – you have been warned. The aroma was coffee from start to finish, though there were some other aromas of chocolate and the aforementioned sweet bean paste to take away from the coffee. Drinking Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast was akin to something like a thick Irish coffee – and I love Irish coffee. There was also some vanilla hints once Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast had warmed up somewhat but it was hard to cut through the coffee.

The body, well, you would need a knife to cut through Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast as it was so thick. The coffee was the boldest of the flavours and the cold brew idea was brilliant as it meant very little of the abrasive sourness that comes with a hot coffee addition came though. Instead, the body was smooth and warming. The sweet bean paste was an interesting adjunct but in all reality, felt like a late night addition that hadn’t been thought through considering the coffee flavours.

Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast : The Bottom Line

If you like big coffee stout beers, you’ll enjoy Minoh Beer Geek Breakfast. Just a shame about the anko really.
