Taisetsu Kellar Piruka is a 5% amber ale from Taisetsu Ji-Beer, based in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, in Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beer and can be found in bottles and occasionally on tap too. It was one of the first beers brewed by Taisetsu Ji-Beer but there is a distinct lack of information about it.

Taisetsu Kellar Piruka Aroma and Taste

I first had this back in 2012 when I went on a trip to Hokkaido. For some reason, I got excited to see the label “kellar” thinking that this had been stored and aged in cellars as the name suggests. Nope, it hadn’t. Taisetsu Kellar Piruka did pour out a copper amber colour with a tiny amount of head on top that just fell flat and disappeared as soon as it had been poured. It was fairly hazy as well, though there wasn’t anything floating in it. The cardboard-like aroma to Taisetsu Kellar Piruka didn’t really evoke ambers of old, more like something that had been stored and gone off. There were some hints of caramel but it just smelt watered down.

And that’s exactly what the body tasted like as well. A watered down caramel amber ale with little to no life in it. It had some semblance of earthiness to it but it was faint and didn’t last long as the watery body washed the flavours away. And that’s all I remember tasting.

Taisetsu Kellar Piruka The Bottom Line

If you go all the way to Asahikawa to try this, then you need your head checked out. This is a proper example of a touristy beer. Nothing of note to mention or worth buying.
