Golden Slumber Pale Ale is a 5% English pale ale from Strange Brewing, based in Niigata, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in bottles and on tap. Strange Brewing is owned by Aoki-san from Bakushu Club Popeye in Ryogoku, Tokyo. Golden Slumber Pale Ale is brewed using English malt and yeast though which hops are used is unknown at the time of writing.

Golden Slumber Pale Ale Aroma and Taste

Golden Slumber Pale Ale poured out a copper orange colour with a minimal amount of head on top. The amount was buttery with some earthy caramel tones to it as well – I’m guessing some Fuggles or East Kent Golding hops were used in making this. Once it had warmed up, the buttery aromas had edged off a bit to let more of the piney hop nose come through as well.

The initial mouthfeel was creamy with a slight butteriness to it – keeping Golden Slumber Pale Ale very much true to the English pale ale style that I begrudgingly grew up with. Golden Slumber Pale Ale had a slight bitterness to it as well – nothing lip-smacking or face curling but it was noticeable. The underlying earthy and piney flavours came through gently to balance off nicely against the sweet malts. The only complaint I would have about Golden Slumber Pale Ale is that the body was a tad thin.
