Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao in Shibuya, Tokyo

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao Front

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao The Bottom Line

I liked Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao a lot – mainly because the food was simply brilliant. There is a good selection and variety of beers on tap but while the prices are a tad high compared to other bars that are closer to Shibuya station, it doesn’t have any table charges and tax is also included in the price. The bar is quite close but it is also non-smoking as well as having free wifi too. Another bonus point is that all the menus are in English too, but the downside is that not all the staff do speak English. If you’re looking to try their beers, then it’s worth a visit, but seeing as you can get most of them in bottles, it’s hard to recommend it over other places in the area.

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao Inside

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao The Full Review

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao opened in July 2017 and is the official taproom for Far Yeast Brewing Company which is based out in Yamanashi. It’s been quite a quick journey for them, having started out brewing in 2014 and then opening this place shows that there is some serious financial clout behind the company.

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao is located about 10 mins from Shibuya or Omote-sando station, in a small residential neighbourhood on the “wrong” side of Shibuya. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the Hachiko and Dogenzaka areas that have many other craft beer bars. The inside is quite small and appeared to be only on one floor of the building; however, there is space for around 30 people inside – if you don’t mind cosying up to someone. Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao is completely non-smoking, has no table charge, and also offers up free wifi too, with the details on the menus.

There are 12 taps of craft beer on at Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao, with the majority being from Far Yeast Brewing Company, and other guest beers too from across Japan. The in-house beers include both the regular lineup as well as some seasonals too. The beers come in two sizes: small (250ml) from ¥600 to ¥900 and regular (400ml) from ¥900 to ¥1,300. All prices include tax though there is no happy hour nor any beer flights on offer.

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao Food 1The food at Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao is predominantly based around bao – steamed bread-like buns with a variety of ingredients – and come in both vegetarian and meat based styles. And they are delicious! There is also other food in store, such as chips, but just go for the bao, especially during lunch times when they are about ¥400 off the regular price.

Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao Second Opinion by Joe

I went to Far Yeast Tokyo Craft Beer & Bao with my sister and parents who were over from the UK, and while the food and beer were both great, the behaviour of the staff was decidedly odd. They seemed flustered at having us there and the member of staff who served us seemingly had a panic attack and lost the ability to read Japanese. My sister was pointing to the Japanese description of what she wanted on the menu and he looked like he didn’t know what it said, and had to get another member of staff who was equally as monosyllabic but slightly more capable to take over. I was left feeling like we had gone in at the wrong time or something. We definitely weren’t made to feel welcome. I would say it isn’t really worth the long walk, especially with so many choices closer to Shibuya station.

Been drinking beer since longer than I can remember. You can find me in a bar, on the slopes, or doing DIY. I enjoy porters, imperial porters, golden ales, and amber / viennas.
