Suginoya Stout is a 5% English stout from Suginoya Beer, based in Fukuoka, Japan. Suginoya Stout is part of their all-year round range of craft beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan. The beer is sometimes labelled as Hakata Stout and is also an award-winning beer, having won almost 10 different awards since 2003, with the latest coming in 2010. In terms of ingredients, the only specialist malt that went into Suginoya Stout is honey malt – an unusual choice considering it’s not a common malt found in craft beer in Japan.

Suginoya Stout

One beer but so many different names for it.

Suginoya Stout Aroma and Taste

Suginoya Stout poured out a thick black colour with an ever-so-slight off white head with some black flecks going on among the large bubbles on top that clung to the side of the glass, right up until the last dribble of beer. It had a strong coffee and liquorice aroma with hints of chocolate coming through too, with just a faint hint of caramel too. The aromas only became stronger as Suginoya Stout warmed up though they never became overpowering or dominating.

Stouts made in Japan are peculiar beers to review – sometime the body is too thin resembling a schwarzbier or dark lager, at times too thick for the alcohol level – Suginoya Stout falls just to the left of the middle with it needing some more body but not quite thin enough that it can’t support the flavours. Coffee, chocolate, cocoa, and some caramel came through in the end, though some bitterness would have been nice. The flavours chugged alone nicely, right through into the aftertaste with them leaving a slight creamy feeling on the tongue.

Suginoya Stout The Bottom Line

Even though Suginoya Stout has won awards, it would have been better if the body were fuller.
