Umbrella Rib in Higashi Umeda, Osaka

Umbrella Rib The Bottom Line

Umbrella Rib is a small little place that involves a bit of a walk but it’s well worth going down there for some decent beers and food. While there is no table charge, prices don’t include the mandatory 8% tax. The menus had the essential information in English, that is, the names of the beers and the food; however, the staff did try to engage us in some English conversation about the beers. Inside of Umbrella Rib is non-smoking, though the small outside area on the street is smoking, so hope the smoke doesn’t blow in on a windy day.

Nice and spacious considering how it looks.

Umbrella Rib The Full Review

Bar #1 – Umbrella Rib – was chosen because it was open when I was hungry and was perhaps the furthest one from the hotel at the time. It was also the newest bar of the lot, having opened in July 2016 and we just missed their one-year anniversary by a couple of weeks. Umbrella Rib is located about a 10-minute walk from Umeda station, though the underground is much closer, it wasn’t worth waiting and travelling for 10-minutes to save five minutes. The area the bar is located in is also a bit spartan of craft beer bars too it seems as we saw no others in the vicinity. Perhaps an idea opportunity.

Umbrella Rib is completely non-smoking inside and had a sparse industrial-design look around the walls with lots of wooden tables. There is space for about 25 people inside, with 10 of those seats at the counter and the remainder close together. It’s possible to sit outside too, though seeing as that is the only place for smoking, then be careful. There is no table charge either at Umbrella Rib, so you can save a bit of money. I’d recommend booking though as turning up at 5:30pm got us counter seats with the rest of the bar filling up very quickly soon after – well it was a Friday night.

The beer list Umbrella Rib is primarily Japanese, with 9 taps of beer, and two of those leaning towards imports or domestic macros, so you can bring your non-craft beer drinking friends here too. The beers come in two sizes, with a 280ml glass costing ¥700 to ¥800, and 480ml US pints from ¥1000 to ¥1100, though none of those prices include tax, so add on 8% or so. There is also a beer flight of any 4 x 180ml glasses of beer on the menu for ¥1800, which is not a bad deal for money wise but still a little pricey. Umbrella Rib also has a daily happy hour from 17:00 to 19:00 where all domestic craft beers are ¥100 0ff, or any beer under ¥800 plus a small three-appetizer set will cost you ¥1000.

Umbrella Rib maybe shouldn’t use the word “rib” in the title as the menu wasn’t, disappointingly, just ribs. There was plenty of choices on the go, with enough for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike, with some of the menu in English. Like the beer menu, prices don’t include tax either so make sure you add on that to the end.

How to Get to Umbrella Rib

The closest station to Umbrella Riba is Higashi Umeda on the Hanshin underground. It’s about a 10 minute walk from there.
