Ohka The Best Days in Naka-meguro, Tokyo

Ohka The Best Days The Bottom Line

Ohka The Best Days isn’t the best place to find new craft beer and nor is it the cheapest place either. If you want large portions of food with craft beer for the usual Tokyo price, then you’ve found somewhere. The guaranteed selection of Shiga Kogen means you get one of Japan’s best breweries on tap though the selection is narrow. The whole bar is non-smoking and all prices include as well as there not being a table charge either. I didn’t see any additional tax being added to the bill either.

Spacious with a hipster feel to it.

Ohka The Best Days Full Review

Nakameguro has a wide and varied craft beer scene for a small suburb: Baird Nakameguro, Hatos, Deguchiya, and now Ohka The Best Days. I was recommended to this place by the owner of Ebisubashi; a tiny bar in the back streets of Ebisu that has a couple of bottles of Gargery in the fridge. So off I went, ignoring the Baird Nakameguro Taproom, Hatos, and Deguchiya in the search for some gyoza and craft beer.

Ohka The Best Days is located just behind Deguchiya in Naka-meguro, in fact, it’s the turning on the left before the store. It’s about a ten minute walk from Naka-meguro station on the Toyoko Line and the Hibiya Line. There is seating inside for about 20 to 30 people, with some tables outside as well for people wishing to brave the summer heat / winter chill. Inside of Ohka The Best Days, the atmosphere was kind of a weird late-80s movie memorabilia theme with skateboarding and snowboarding videos being played in the background – kind of a hipster feel to it for want of a better expression. The whole place is non-smoking and there isn’t a table charge either.

The beers aren’t that exciting at Ohka The Best Days, though they are solid. There are four taps on of craft beer and when I went, three were dedicated to Shiga Kogen and one to an import that rotates, which is usually a US one. A shame seeing as Deguchiya is around the corner. Beers come in two sizes: half US pints for ¥600 to ¥800, and US pints for ¥1,000 to ¥1,200. Price included tax, which is to be expected at that price, and the servings were decent.

Non-garlic versions as I didn't want to stink the train up.

Mabo-dofu - massive portion for the price.

However, it was the food we were told about and boy, it’s good. The majority of the food is styled around gyoza and popular Chinese dishes such as mabo-dofu too. The gyoza come in two versions: with garlic or without garlic, so if you’re on a date, then you don’t have to stink. The mabo-dofu was huge in comparison and was tasty. All very tasty. There were probably chips on the menu but after a belly full of gyoza and mabo-dofu, I was stuffed.
