Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA is a 6% rye IPA from Uchu Brewing, based in Hokuto city, in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round line-up and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA is brewed using two types of rye malt – crystal rye and malted rye, along with a variety of hops including some in-house grown Cascade hops, with imported US Columbus, Simcoe, Citra, and Galaxy.

Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA Aroma and Taste

Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA poured out a slightly hazy golden orange colour with a bare minimum amount of white head. It had a strong peppery and ginger nose to it – almost like as if someone had roasted some ginger in the hose. A peculiar aroma to rye IPA but it worked – just. However, the main problem was that the spicy nose took away from the hops, which meant they were hard to distinguish from the spicy aroma going on.

The ginger flavour proved to be as potent in the body as it was in the nose – well potent would be an understatement. More of a kicking and screaming through the house kind of toddler potent level. A shame as the bitterness from the hops brought the typical IPA flavour to the forefront – albeit briefly. The ginger flavours lingered, bringing some warming sensation to the throat, but it did mean that Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA was more of a sipper than a downer of a beer. Some grapefruit and citrus came through once Uchu Fresh Hop Rye IPA had warmed up, but that took some time to happen.
