Vertere Californica is a 7% American IPA from Vertere based in Okutama, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition range and can be found on tap and in bottles. Vertere Californica is brewed using Maris Otter, Munich, Carared, and Melanondin, with a very American hop bill of Columbus, Simcoe, Cascade, and Chinook.

Vertere Californica Aroma and Taste

Vertere Californica poured out a deep reddish brown colour with barely any head on top – what head there was didn’t last long enough for me to take a picture of it. There was strong piney citrus nose coming off the beer, alongside a distinct caramel malt nose as well. Vertere Californica also had a slight buttery twinge to it as well – deliberate or not, it wasn’t welcome in what was supposedly a West Coast IPA according to Vertere.

The body was more of the same – a buttery caramel malt body with a piney citrus bitterness that reigned through. At 7%, I expected some alcohol heat to come through, but nothing did, even when Vertere Californica had warmed up. It finished off with lingering pine flavour with that familiar buttery note to it.

Vertere Californica The Bottom Line

Vertere Californica was ruined by the buttery off-note – give this a miss unless someone gifts it to you.
