Bayern Meister Beer The Bottom Line

Bayern Meister Beer suffers from the same fate as Sylvans Restaurant ā€“ they have some cracking beers on tap but you have to be willing to drive to get there or be with someone that doesnā€™t mind driving. The beers are really good representations of the styles they are supposed to be and are well priced. The whole place reminded me of someoneā€™s front room with a bar tacked on, and the friendly nature meant it was very easy to stay for a few beers. Itā€™s possible to get bottles of the beers to takeaway too. The prices donā€™t include tax but there is no table charge either to pay. The whole place is family friendly and non-smoking, though vegetarians may wish to get some food beforehand.

Bayern Meister Beer Inside

Bayern Meister Beer The Full Review

Iā€™ve had someĀ Bayern Meister Beer in the past but at a hotel in Chiba of all places ā€“ why there?! When the German embassy holds a party, as theyā€™re prone to do, then they order beer fromĀ Bayern Meister Beer, and the head brewer, Stephen Rager, will travel up to the embassy. When the head brewer has passed the German Brewing exam and holds the plaque to show it, then you know youā€™re onto something good.Ā Bayern Meister Beer opened in 2004 and was the first Bavarian brewery in Japan. Yep, all those other breweries in Japan were owned by Japanese people or companies.Ā  All of their equipment has been shipped in from Germany, and the malts, hops, and yeast too come from Germany as well.

Bayern Meister Beer is located in the middle of nowhere. I kid you not, the only (reasonable) way to get there is by car so pick a friend who doesnā€™t drink, or pick one that doesnā€™t mind watching you get drunk and you can buy them beers in return. The nearest station is a 20min car drive ā€“ donā€™t even think about walking as itā€™s mostly uphill from Nishi-Fujinomiya. I didnā€™t see any buses in the area and even the Bayern Meister Beer homepage fails to list any. There is a bus that goes to Shiraito Falls from the station which stopsĀ relatively nearby to the brewery at Fuji Hospital followed up with a 5 to 10 minute walk.

When you do get here, youā€™re greeted by a building that appears to be someoneā€™s house, with a large factory tacked onto the end. Going inside, thereā€™s space for about 20 people seated and another 5 people standing. However, the whole place is decked out with awards and newspaper cuttings ā€“ itā€™s almost like someoneā€™s mum has framed everything their child has done and put it up for all and sundry to see. It gives the room a quaint edge to it. Oh, table charge? There is none but there also isnā€™t any Wifi either.

There are three taps of beer on at Bayern Meister Beer, with everything being in-house beers. There are always two regular beers on tap alongside a seasonal special. The beers come in two different sizes with small (250ml) from Ā„450 and large (450ml) fromĀ Ā„700. The beers can also be bought to take away as well, though do ignore the gift sets as you end up paying more for the same five beers you could just pick up from the fridge. The prices didnā€™t include tax, so do factor that in at the end. There was no happy hour nor a tasting set either.

Unfortunately, on the day we went to Bayern Meister Beer, everyone had gone to the German embassy for an event ā€“ clearly they hadnā€™t heard BeerTengoku were in the area šŸ˜‰ ā€“ and as such, there was no food available for us. Not even some bread or chips. But we were told that the food is predominantly German based, so expect lots of meat and a few vegetables alongside the meat.

Nice write-up! This beer is great. But, Fujinomiya is in Shizuoka, not Yamanashi…
