Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale is 5% Belgian wit from Nichinan Brewery, based in Miyazaki, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range and can be found in bottles though we’re yet to see it on tap at the time of writing. Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale is brewed using locally sourced yuzu and also imported coriander.

Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale Aroma and Taste

Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale poured out a clear golden straw colour with a plump white head on top. The head didn’t last long and there appeared to be a massive amount of gas rising up through the beer. I should have taken a video really to show how much but thankfully it wasn’t a bottle bomb. There was a subtle aroma of yuzu coming off the beer, as well as a spicy biscuit nose to it. Once Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale had warmed up, there was also some yeast funk to it – not unpleasant by any means but distinctive.

It was just over 30c when I drank Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale – and it didn’t last long! Thankfully I had bought two beers and the second one didn’t deviate in flavour from the first. The yuzu was present but not overpowering, as it’s prone to do. The malt produced a slight biscuit base that had some crispness to it, along with a wheat creaminess to it. Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale finished off with a slight yeast funk lying under the surface, along with a bitter edge from the yuzu.

Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale The Bottom Line

Nichinan Belgian Wheat Ale was a good surprise. It has the yuzu levels just about right but could do with some more of the other ingredients coming through.
