Preston Brown Ale is a 5% brown ale from Preston Ale, based in Tochigi, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan.Preston Brown Ale is based on a traditional British brown ale recipe though we don’t know what hops or malts are used in making it. It’s also won a few awards at the World Beer Awards in 2012 and 2015 but that doesn’t say much as they were just for the local Asian area.

It’s brown alright but more of a copper brown.

Preston Brown Ale Aroma and Taste

Preston Brown Ale poured out a copper brown colour that was quite clear and free of any haze to it. There was a slight head on top with some large bubbles though they didn’t last long as they faded away to leave a thin white ring around the outside of the glass. Preston Brown Ale had a sweet caramel aroma with a tinge of earthiness to it. There wasn’t else much to it in terms of aroma.

The lack of haze should have warned me but Preston Brown Ale was quite watery and lacked a decent body to support the beer. While the caramel malt flavours were tasty, there was a lack of lasting flavour on the tongue. Which is what British brown ales taste like so they’ve hit the style spot on. The aftertaste had a slight spiciness to it that only came through one Preston Brown Ale had warmed up somewhat which reminded me of my Grandfather who used to store his beer somewhere warm – a running joke in our family and probably something that stopped me from drinking from a young age.

Preston Brown Ale The Bottom Line

If you like your beers watery and one-dimensional, like a British brown ale is, then Preston Brown Ale is right up your street. Else, give it a miss.
