Hokkaido Foodist in Chuo-ku, Tokyo

The second in our series of antenna shops is Hokkaido Foodist, based near the Yaesu exit of Tokyo station. The store opened in 2004 and while NewDays stores may, from time to time, sell regional based products from Hokkaido, such as the awesome Sapporo Classic (one of my favourite beers from the macro companies), Hokkaido Foodist only sells products from Hokkaido. Why is that important?

Hokkaido has eleven breweries / brewpubs (at the time of writing) which doesn’t seem a lot, but when the area produces the fames Abashiri Okhotsk Blue Ryuhyo Draft, what else do you need to know? There are also other better breweries in the area, with North Island BeerHakodate Beer, Taisetsu Ji-Beer, Noboribetsu Brewpub, along with Niseko Brewing, to name a few.

You can just see some decent beer there on the shelf second from bottom on the left.

Disappointingly, Hokkaido Foodist doesn’t stock all of those breweries’ products in stock though, which is a great shame as Abashiri Beer seems to be the most popular depressingly. We did come across some Otaru Beer while we there, so there is something good there if you’re in the area of Yaesu exit and can’t find Liquors Hasegawa – a far better choice for beer, but not necessary the delights that Hokkaido has to offer. Moreover, there is a small cafe next door where you can drink on site.

How to Get to Hokkaido Foodist

The closest station to Hokkaido Foodist is Tokyo Station, though seeing that is a maze, then I suggest the Yaesu Central exit. Hokkaido Foodist is about a two-minute walk from there.
