Baird Single Take Session Ale is a 4.5% Belgian pale ale from Baird Beer, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beer and is brewed using the in-house Belgian strain of yeast and is also unfiltered too, so be careful when you’re pouring it as you may disturb the sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It contains a variety of malts too, with Pilsner being the main base malt, with Rye, Sour, Caramel malts being used as the speciality malts. Baird Single Take Session Ale can be found in bottles and on tap at all Baird Taprooms across Japan. The label is inspired by Neil Young’s 1989 live performance the song “Rockin’ In The Free World”.

Hazy orange – a cack-handed pour really.

Baird Single Take Session Ale Aroma and Taste

Baird Single Take Session Ale is one of those beers that I’ve been wanting to try for a while but have been putting it off for some reason – perhaps the low abv or that I’m not a big fan of Belgian pale ales – could be the Belgian funk or perhaps the lack of hoppy bite compared to the American pale ales I’m used to.

Baird Single Take Session Ale poured out a hazy orange brown colour but I’m guessing because I mucked up the pour as there was no sediment at the bottom of the bottle. It had a spicy rye-like aroma with the distinctive Belgian funk to it. There were some sweet hints of caramel coming through as well but the hops were faint to say the least – some citrus-like aroma but they were dulled in comparison to the other aromas.

It tasted like a Belgian ale from the get go – distinct Belgian esters flowing through the spicy rye punch and soothing caramel sweetness. It had an almost herbal-like flavour to the body too, with a lingering taste to it from start to finish. It was an easy beer to drink, without a distinct bitterness nor off-flavours. Perhaps Baird Beer were going for an inoffensive beer as that was it felt like.

Baird Single Take Session Ale The Bottom Line

Baird Single Take Session Ale is an inoffensive Belgian pale ale – the flavours are too subtle to send the tastebuds reeling nor the excitement going.
