The Lower Right One Paragraph Review

If you’re looking for cheap Japanese craft beers that are hard to find to complete your Untappd collection, then you would do well at The Lower Right. With the long happy hour beer prices and the large glasses, it’s a good place to do some afternoon drinking though the prices don’t include tax. Thankfully there isn’t a table charge though so that’s one less surprise. For those non-smokers and smokers, smoking is only allowed outside of food serving hours. There isn’t any wifi and the menus are in predominantly Japanese with a smidgen of English though the bar staff did try to help explain in English.

The lights were too bright at this point but quickly got turned down for some romantic lightning.

The Lower Right Full Review

The Shibadaimon area seems to be seeing an influx of craft beer bars and restaurants over the last couple of years, with Devilcraft Hamamatsucho branch, Soulbird, On The Table by Goodbeer Faucets and also The Lower Right opening up. The Lower Right is located in the Shibadaimon area of eastern Tokyo, about one minute from Daimon station on the Toei Asakusa and Oedo lines. It’s also located near JR Hamamatsucho station for those coming that way. It opened in September 2015 and sells Belgian beers as well as domestic craft beer too.

The inside of The Lower Right is located in the basement of SVAX Daimon building and as a result, is quite dark. However, it is spacious with about ten seats at the counter and four large tables at the back of the bar. There are also three large table outside with high seating if you want some “fresh” Tokyo air with your beers. The confusing thing is that smoking is allowed only when food is not being served, so outside 11:30 ~ 15:00 and 16:00 until close, the bar is smoking both inside and outside. There isn’t any table charge for the place at all though there is no WiFi available.

Prices don't include tax but when happy is 550yen it's not much of a complaint.

Yes, 550yen plus tax for happy hour beers at 400ml.

There are about twenty taps on at The Lower Right, with half of them dedicated to Belgium and imported beers, and the other half being dedicated to domestic craft beers. Beers come in two sizes: medium (250ml) from ¥580 and large (400ml) from ¥880. There is also a beer tasting flight for ¥880 that includes three 120ml glasses of any beer on the menu. What’s even better is from 11:00 ~ 19:00, all large beers are ¥550. Prices don’t include tax, so you need to add on another 8%. The menus are predominantly in Japanese, with just the name of the beers in English, though the bar staff did speak some English without prompting when I asked them a questions.

The Lower Right Food A bar that only sells food at fixed times…strange in Japan.

Unfortunately, I just missed the lunch food session which meant no food for me. Not even chips or even some nuts. A little strange to have food only served during fixed times without the option for anything else so be warned if you get peckish outside of the food serving hours. The menu is in Japanese only, but again, the bar staff can help explain to you in English what some of the options are.

How to Get to The Lower Right

The closest station to The Lower Right is Daimon on the Toei Asakusa and Oedo Lines. Take exit A4 and cross the road and the building is in front of you. It can also be reached from JR Hamamatsucho on the Yamanote and Keihin Tohoku lines from the north exit. Turn left and walk straight. At Daimon junction (大門), turn left and the building is on the left.

Ive been trying to figure out their non-smoking hours, too. Confusing! Just went for lunch on a Sunday before 1pm and the table next to us lit up and was given an ashtray so I dont know what to believe now.

Sorry about that – maybe the hours have changed when I went there. It’s painful frustrating to hear that smoking is allowed as when we went, noone was allowed to smoke and people were sent outside if they wanted to.
When I next go along, I will try and get a better confirmation from the owners.

So, of the four craft beer venues in Daimon, in which order should the pub crawl go?
Looking at the map, I think Soul Bird, On The Table by Good Beer Faucets, The Lower Right, then DevilCraft Hamamatsucho.

Yep, seems about right.
Get some walking done to build up a hunger for the DC pizza.
